Davis Cup Giving to Disaster Relief

The U.S. Davis Cup tennis team is donating $100,000 to the disaster relief efforts in New York City.

"It's our small way of giving back to the people who have been closely affected by the Sept. 11 tragedy," team captain Patrick McEnroe said Wednesday. "As athletes and role models, we have a duty to help out however we can."

McEnroe, a New York resident, and team members Andy Roddick, Todd Martin, James Blake, Don Johnson, Jared Palmer, Robby Ginepri and assistant coach Jim Courier all contributed to the donation, along with the United States Tennis Association.

The team has yet to decide which charity will get the money.

The United States faces India in a World Group qualifier starting Friday in Winston-Salem. The competition was originally scheduled for Sept. 21-23, but was postponed following the terrorist attacks.

"I think it's one of the greatest honors in sports to be asked to participate on behalf of your country," Roddick said. "It's something I've been looking forward to all my life."

Team members planned to wear hats bearing the logos of the New York City fire and police departments during the competition.

"Certainly I know there will be more emotion this weekend," McEnroe said. "I know I'll feel it when we go out there and hear the national anthem and then play as a team."
