Senate Wants Sept. 11 As Nat'l Day

WASHINGTON - The Senate wants Sept. 11 declared a day of remembrance for the thousands who died in last month's terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the crash of a hijacked jetliner in Pennsylvania.

The resolution, passed 100-0 on Thursday, requests an annual presidential proclamation that would have the country remember the victims with flags flown at half-staff and a nationwide moment of silence.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D. said the resolution is meant to "make sure our nation never forgets."

The resolution remembers those who died _ workers in the two buildings, passengers and crew members of the four hijacked airplanes, and the firefighters, police and emergency personnel who died trying to save them. It recommends that the government lower flags to half-staff on future anniversaries, asks state and local governments to hold appropriate ceremonies and urges the national moment of silence.

The House now will deal with the same resolution later.

"Whether we live another hundred months or another hundred years, we will never forget the thousands of innocent victims who lost their lives," Daschle said.
